Hong Kong's Waste Management Crisis Deepens
Overflowing Landfills and Strained Public Services
Hong Kong, a bustling metropolis with a population of over 7 million, is grappling with a burgeoning waste management crisis. Despite its gleaming skyline and reputation for cleanliness, the city's public services are struggling to contain its rapidly accumulating rubbish.
Vehicles Outnumbering Citizens
With over 800,000 licensed vehicles, including more than 500,000 private cars, Hong Kong has a staggering vehicle-to-human ratio. This high number of vehicles, coupled with a lack of adequate parking spaces, is contributing to traffic congestion and air pollution.
Overflowing Landfills
Collecting rubbish is only the tip of the iceberg. Hong Kong lacks the technical capabilities to effectively treat and dispose of its waste. Three of the city's four landfills are already at or near capacity, and the remaining landfill is rapidly filling up.
Threatened Wildlife
The waste crisis is also impacting Hong Kong's marine ecosystem. Plastic debris accumulating in the city's waters poses a significant threat to marine wildlife. Overfishing and a lack of management are further endangering the already vulnerable species in Hong Kong's waters.
