Canadian Government Expands Electric Vehicle Rebate Program, Makes Carsharing Companies Eligible
New Incentives for Zero-Emission Vehicles
The Canadian government is expanding its electric vehicle (EV) rebate program to make it more inclusive and accessible to consumers and businesses. The program, known as the iZEV Program, will now include larger vehicles, such as SUVs and pickup trucks, and will make carsharing companies eligible for incentives.
Eligibility and Funding Availability
The iZEV Program offers point-of-sale incentives for eligible consumers who purchase or lease new zero-emission vehicles. The incentives are subject to funding availability and will be available until the funds are exhausted.
To be eligible for the incentives, consumers must purchase or lease a new EV that meets specific criteria, including having a minimum range of 50 kilometers and a top speed of at least 130 kilometers per hour. Eligible vehicles also must be certified by Transport Canada and meet other safety and emissions standards.
Carsharing Companies Now Eligible
In addition to expanding the types of eligible vehicles, the government is also making carsharing companies eligible for incentives under the iZEV Program. As of March 28, 2023, carsharing companies that are pre-approved by Transport Canada can apply for incentives to purchase or lease new zero-emission vehicles for their fleets.
This expansion is expected to encourage more Canadians to consider electric vehicles, as carsharing is a popular and convenient option for many urban residents.
Government Investment in Electric Vehicles
The expansion of the iZEV Program is part of the government's broader commitment to supporting the adoption of electric vehicles in Canada. The government has invested $2 billion in consumer purchases of ZEVs, and is working with provinces and territories to develop a national charging network.
The government believes that electric vehicles are an important part of Canada's efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and transition to a cleaner, more sustainable future.
